Robert Gilliland Beckel [1] (November 15, 1948 – Feb xx, 2022) was an American political annotator and pundit, and political operative. He was an annotator and commentator on Flim-flam News. He had been a commentator on Fox News where he co-hosted The Five until he was released in 2015 after beingness absent for several months while recovering from back surgery.[ii] After departing Play tricks News in 2015, Beckel became a commentator for CNN. On January 16, 2017, he returned to Fox News equally a co-host of The Five.[3] On May 19, 2017, Fox News announced Beckel was released again later he was accused of making a racist remark against another Pull a fast one on News employee.[4]

Beckel was built-in in Greenwich Village, Manhattan and grew upwardly in Lyme, Connecticut.[five] He is the son of Cambridge Graham Beckel Jr. (author of Workshops for the World: The United Nations Family of Agencies)[6] and Ellen Gilliland Beckel.[vii] [8] He is the older brother of actor Graham Beckel.[two]
Beckel received a BA from Wagner College in Staten Island.[ix] While in college, he played football[10] and worked for Robert F. Kennedy'south presidential campaign in 1968.[2] [11]
After college, Beckel served in the Philippines as a Peace Corps volunteer from 1971 to 1972,[12] and afterwards was a graduate schoolhouse professor of politics at George Washington Academy.[13] [14]

In 1977, Beckel joined the United States Department of State as deputy banana secretarial assistant of state for congressional relations, becoming the youngest deputy banana secretary of state in the Carter administration.[xi] In that role he helped to shepherd the Panama Canal Treaty through Congress to ratification.[11] [15] The post-obit year he was appointed special banana to the president for legislative affairs, working on ratification of Salt II and Mideast treaties.[11] [16]

Beckel was the entrada manager for Walter Mondale'due south 1984 presidential campaign.[17] During that campaign he became known as the man who effectively wrapped the Wendy'south slogan "Where's the beef?" around Gary Hart,[11] [10] Mondale'southward opponent for the Democratic nomination.
In late 1984 he formed the consulting firm Bob Beckel & Assembly, or BBA, a lobbying firm that was succeeded in 1985 by Beckel–Cowan.[18]
In 2002 Beckel managed the campaign of Alan Blinken, the Democratic nominee for Usa Senate in Idaho, until he resigned later on it became public that he was a witness and victim in an extortion attempt by a prostitute.[nineteen] In 2010, he fabricated a cursory appearance as himself on the Season 8 premiere of Goggle box series 24 in a mock fence with beau Fox News Analyst Monica Crowley.

Personal life [edit]
In 1992 Beckel married Leland Ingham.[35] They had two children and divorced in 2002.[36]
Beckel was a recovering alcoholic.[two] [37] He spoke openly about his past addictions to drugs and booze, admitting in July 2011 on The V: "I'm a recovering addict and cocaine was my drug of selection."
In 2007 Beckel said that he was involved in an altercation in a Bethesda, Maryland, grocery store parking lot with a human who took issue with his anti–George W. Bush-league bumper stickers.[38]
In October 2011, Beckel almost choked to death on a slice of shrimp at a Play a joke on News reception, but was saved by Fox News master Roger Ailes and The Five co-host Eric Bolling.[2] [39]
In early on 2015, Beckel was absent from The Five for a number of weeks, which led to speculation that he had been fired, but Fox later announced that his absence was due to "health-related issues." It was later revealed that he had major back surgery on March 26 at a New York–area hospital.[ii]

In late 2015, Beckel published a memoir, I Should Be Dead: My Life Surviving Politics, TV, and Addiction, co-written with John David Mann.[2] Cal Thomas hosted a volume-signing party celebrating publication of Beckel's book, which aired in November 2015 on C-SPAN.[41] [42]

Beckel died at his home in Silver Spring, Maryland, on February 20, 2022, at the historic period of 73.[5] Sean Hannity[43], Cal Thomas[44], and Dana Perino paid tribute to Beckel.[45]

After a political baptism as a higher educatee in Robert Kennedy's 1968 campaign, a tour of duty in the Peace Corps, and a successful stint heading up his own consulting firm, Beckel joined the regime in 1977. As the deputy assistant secretarial assistant of state, he steered the controversial Panama Culvert Treaties through Congress. He moved to the White Firm to head an administration effort to printing Congress into passing the Mideast and Table salt II treaties.
